Job Purpose
To support the effective delivery of the Chemistry curriculum, with a focus on IB MYP and DP, by managing laboratory facilities, preparing materials for practical lessons, ensuring safe chemical handling, and promoting sustainable and inquiry-based learning practices. The role also involves maintaining compliance with safety regulations, supporting student investigations, and upholding school safeguarding standards.
Key Responsibilities
1. Laboratory Preparation & Support
– Prepare chemical solutions, reagents, and equipment for practical chemistry lessons (MYP & DP).
– Assist teachers during practical sessions and internal assessments (IAs), especially those requiring complex setups.
– Set up, test, and demonstrate experiments before class sessions when required.
2. Health, Safety & Compliance
– Implement and monitor proper storage, labelling, and disposal of chemicals in accordance with IB guidelines and local safety regulations.
– Maintain and update the Chemical Inventory and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
– Conduct routine safety inspections and ensure the lab complies with HSE standards and school policies.
– Train students on safe lab practices and assist in emergency response drills.
3. Equipment Maintenance & Inventory
– Maintain, calibrate, and service laboratory apparatus regularly.
– Keep accurate records of equipment usage, breakages, and orders.
– Ensure laboratory is stocked with necessary materials and consumables.
4. Documentation & Recordkeeping
– Maintain updated risk assessments and COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) records.
– Assist in documentation for IB Chemistry internal assessments and lab-related projects.
– Support teachers in maintaining IB-required documentation for practical hours and investigations.
5. Collaboration & Curriculum Support
– Collaborate with science staff to design innovative and inquiry-based experiments aligning with IB approaches to teaching and learning.
– Support students working on Extended Essays or Personal Projects with chemical/lab requirements.
– Participate in professional development related to IB practices, lab safety, or subject-specific tools.
Key Skills and Qualifications
Essential:
– Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or related discipline.
– Previous experience in a school or academic laboratory.
– Familiarity with IB MYP/DP Chemistry practical requirements and curriculum.
– Knowledge of laboratory safety procedures and chemical handling.
– Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
Desirable:
– Experience in an international school setting.
– Familiarity with digital tools and data logging software (Excel and google-sheet) for lab inventory and documentation.
– Certification in laboratory safety (if available).
Working Conditions
– Based in school laboratories with occasional support required during school events, science fairs, or exhibitions.
– May involve handling hazardous materials under controlled conditions.
– Regular working hours with possible extension during exam or IA preparation periods
