School roles are the different responsibilities taken up by people who help the school run smoothly and support students’ learning and safety. Each role focuses on a specific part of academics, administration, or student care.

Academic Roles

  • Principal/Headmaster: Leads the school, sets academic policies, manages staff, and maintains discipline and overall standards.

  • Teachers: Plan lessons, teach subjects, assess students, and guide their academic and personal development. In Montessori settings, teachers act as guides who observe and support independence rather than lecture constantly.

  • Assistant teachers: Support the main teacher with classroom management, materials, and extra help for students needing attention.

Student Support Roles

  • Counselors: Help students with emotional, social, and career guidance, and handle issues like stress, conflict, or bullying.

  • Special educators: Work with children who have learning or developmental difficulties, adapting materials and strategies.

  • Librarians: Manage the library, teach research skills, and promote reading habits among students.

Administrative Roles

  • Administrative officers/clerks: Handle admissions, fee records, correspondence, and government or board documentation.

  • Accountant/bursar: Manages school finances, budgeting, payroll, and audits.

  • Receptionist/front office staff: Manage inquiries, phone calls, and communication with parents and visitors.

Operations and Safety Roles

  • Transport in‑charge/drivers/attenders: Ensure safe student transport, bus routes, and adherence to safety norms.

  • Security staff: Control entry and exit, keep the campus secure, and support emergency procedures.

  • Housekeeping and maintenance: Keep classrooms, toilets, and grounds clean and ensure buildings, electricals, and furniture are in working order.

Leadership and Coordination Roles

  • Vice-principal/academic coordinator: Supports the principal, oversees timetables, examinations, curriculum planning, and teacher supervision.

  • Heads of department (HODs): Lead subject teams (like Maths, Science, English), standardize
